the Memorial Cancer Resource Center to assist with concerns of cancer
patients and their families. The team includes our receptionist,
oncology nurse specialists, chaplain, clinical social workers, clinical
dietitian, and massage therapist.
Cancer professionals and trained volunteers who have experienced
cancer are available at both Resource Centers to assist patients
and their families, to help them learn more about a specific cancer,
and to give guidance on how to deal with the disease.
Cancer Education/Prevention
Education is a key to cancer treatment and prevention; it empowers
patients in their fight against cancer. In addition to printed materials,
books, videos, and computer resources, the Memorial Cancer Resource
Center calls on physicians, cancer survivors and their families,
oncology nurses, social workers, clergy, clinical dietitians and
other to present educational programs throughout the year. A variety
of classes and seminars are offered on how to prevent specific cancers,
on screenings and early detection, and that focus on the physical,
emotional, and spiritual issues of cancer.
Support Groups
Support groups are led by registered nurses, chaplains, social
workers, and cancer survivors. The purpose is to provide a private,
supportive environment where cancer patients and their families
can find emotional support and learn about treatment modalities
and symptom management. Several groups are available to meet different
needs, including: Cancer Support Group, Prostate Cancer, Myeloma,
Gynecological Cancers, Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer and Mind-Body
Skills Groups.
Loss, Grief and Bereavement Assistance
Grief is an intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical response
to loss. At Memorial Cancer Resource Center patients and their loved
ones can find the counseling and support they need to deal with
the effects of cancer in their lives. Individuals and families may
speak personally with a Memorial chaplain, or clinical social worker.
Several support groups are available.
Relaxation and Stress Reduction Therapies – Healing Body
and Soul
Cancer diagnoses and treatments can be stressful, and studies have
shown that stress reduction can play a critical role in the fight
against cancer. Memorial’s Cancer Resource Center offers a
wide range of services to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
• Reiki Therapy (pronounced RAY-kee) promotes the healing
of physical and emotional ailments through gentle touch while restoring
harmony, reducing stress and providing deep relaxation. Reiki sessions
are free for cancer patients in treatment.
• Massage Therapy for Cancer Patients involves gentle massage
to relieve muscular tension stimulate circulation, and induce feelings
of deep relaxation and tranquility. Massage therapy is free for
patients currently undergoing treatment.
• Creative Movement for Cancer Patients uses music and silence,
stillness and movement. A combination of Yoga stretches and guided
imagery, this class focuses on deepening awareness of the body and
relaxation for cancer patients and their caregivers.
• Healing through the Arts Workshops are an alternative to
traditional support groups. Participants are able to express their
emotions using a variety of artistic media. Painting, scrapbooking,
journaling, guided imagery and music are some of the mediums used.
No artistic ability is needed and materials are provided free of
charge.
Multi-Specialty Treatment Planning Conference
Newly diagnosed patients with complex or recurrent cancer face
many decisions concerning their treatment, which often involves
visits to several specialists. The Memorial Multi-Specialty Treatment
Planning Conference is a team-based concept that brings together
surgical, medical, gynecologic and radiation oncologists and other
specialists to meet with the patient and family members. The group
discusses treatment options, answers questions and develops a plan
of treatment that all are confident is the best approach. Continuing
support is available as the plan is implemented.
Testimonials
“Thank God for people with the foresight to know our family
would need a place like this where they treat the whole person and
not just the disease.”
